Here's a readily available score for $8.99 that typifies why I put Argentine Malbec amongst the top tier for QPR wines out there in the retail marketplace. The Malbec grapes for this wine were sourced from various high-altitude vineyards througout the Mendoza region along the western edge of Argentina. The fruit went through an extended maceration before being fermented and pressed to a mix of French and American casks for seven months.
This wine is a deep violet in the glass with appropriate aromas of violets, plums, mocha, cigar box, and toasty oak. Smooth and supple on the mouth, with an accessible attack and mouthfeel befitting a drink-now caliber of Malbec, but one with character beyond its price point. Soft, supple, and smooth on the palate, the wine exhibits the common characteristics between the Malbec and Merlot flavor profiles, but also amply delivers the spiciness, leaf tobacco, and bittersweet chocolate character that typifies the high-altitude Argentinian pedigree. Lots of plummy, black cherry, and blueberry fruit here, with supple tannins, moderate acidity, and a mouth-staining finish that makes for a very satisfying drink of wine - easily outpacing any $9 CA Merlot or Cab that readily comes to mind. Not a draw-dropper, but what do you want for $9?
We paired it, naturally, with a chimichurri skirt steak, and it shined.
Easily recommendable at the price point.
