This consistent value wine is 100% Shiraz grown on Jim Barry's Lodge Hill Estate in South Australia's Clare Valley. The wine is aged for 11 months in 62% American and 38% French Oak.
In the glass, the wine has a purple core surrounded by garnet. Lots of herbal character going on in this wine, right from the start. The nose offers aromas of eucalyptus, mint, anise, fennel and clove overlaying a base of blackberries and plums, with mocha, cracked pepper, and vanillin oak. It is smooth and medium in body, with decent acidity for the genre. On the palate, spicy raspberry joins the blackberry and plum fruit, with continued herbal complexity, and hints of tar and scorched earth. Pronounced anise and eucalyptus on the back palate, and finishes with plenty of fruit mixed with herbs, spices, chocolate, and toasty vanilla oak, with smooth, ripe tannins doing their thing.
Very solid value here for $15. Not an over-the-top jampot of a wine, this Aussie is medium-bodied, with a modest bit of structure and refinement. The herbal influence on the flavor profile was pronounced and suprising. This is high-end casual fare that would be great with barbeque or smoked meats (pulled pork!), or strong cheeses.
